Wedding Favours: A Sweet Tradition with a Modern Twist

Wedding favours are small tokens of appreciation for guests attending your special day and it turns out they have a long and fascinating history...

I won't recap their entire history, and while their exact origins are a bit hazy, it's believed wedding favours evolved from Roman wedding feasts where guests would receive gifts from generous newlyweds. Over time, these gifts have transformed into small, often edible, keepsakes.

Today, couples have a vast array of options when it comes to choosing wedding favours and with so many choices, it can be hard to decide what's truly worth the time and money.

If you're looking for some inspiration, I've listed some of my favourites seen at recent weddings below:

Chocolate Lollies with Hearts on from The Slabb
  • Chocolate: A timeless classic which rarely gets left behind! The best chocolate favour I've seen were these fab choc lollies from Slabb.

  • Scratch Cards: Cheap and cheerful and can be packaged with some good puns, it's a small gamble that could lead to a big win for a lucky guest.

  • Golf Pencils: A couple I had were golf-mad so everyone received a personalised golf pencil, it was inexpensive and a added a unique touch which came in useful too!

  • Personalised Letters: A heartfelt and meaningful gesture. Write a short, personal note to each family member expressing your gratitude for their presence and maybe a funny anecdote, package it up nicely and you've got a really sweet favour they'll cherish.

  • Custom Illustrations or Photo Booths: Everyone loves to take home something which shows they were there and looking great! Live illustrators provide a real time way of doing this and are the latest trend but a photo booth has always been a great way of doing something similar!

And now for the favours I think are a little overrated:

  • Wildflower Seeds: Whilst these are eco-friendly and go well with country bumpkin themed weddings, they often end up forgotten in drawers.

  • Bubbles: Fun for a moment, but quickly disappear and unless you have more kids than adults at your wedding (which I would not advise btw) they'll just be left on tables.

  • Mints: A common and somewhat generic choice usually packaged in plastic!

My top tips for Choosing Favours:

  • Consider your budget: Favours can quickly add up, so set a realistic budget early on and don't stretch yourself if it's going to tip you over.

  • Reflect your personalities: Choose favours that reflect your interests and hobbies as a couple and personalise if you can.

  • Think about your guests: Consider if they will actually be appreciated and used.

  • At the end of the day... You are probably feeding and providing your guests with some drinks and some fun. You've invited them along to enjoy a day about you two so you are already giving even if they aren't walking away with a physical gift.

Ultimately, the best wedding favours are those that are meaningful to you and your partner and offer sentiment or practicality to your guests. Don't feel pressured to follow trends – choose something that reflects your unique style and shows your guests how much you appreciate their presence on your special day.

Sunday Morning Planning Sessions take place every Sunday at 10am over on my Instagram, they're a great way for you to ask any questions you need to ask before visiting venues that day or doing some of your own wedding planning. Usually there would be a poll here for you to vote for this week's subject but this week I will be coming to you Live from the Quirky Wedding Fayre at Hawke Barn, Devon! See you there!
